Assignment Submission Guidelines

G. Michael Guy

Grading assignments is one way which I am able to give you feedback on your progress. Here is some helpful information concerning the submission and grading of your work.

Formatting Guidelines:

The grading process is greatly expedited whenever you format your assignment in a way which allows me to easily find your answers, correct mistakes, and assign points. Please follow the guidelines below whenever you submit an assignment for grading. The purpose of these guidelines isn't to make the assignment more annoying. I won't be getting out a ruler and measuring your assignment nor nit-picking your formatting. However, please follow these guidelines as closely as possible.

You may download a sample page which follows these guidelines by clicking this link!

  • Put your name on the top line.
  • Write the Assignment on the top line after your name.
  • Write your Academic Honesty Disclosure on the line directly under your name. Then skip a line before starting your work.
  • Put the problem number, which should also note the section from the book where the problem was found, to the left of the red left margin line on ruled paper. Example: 3.4.1 would indicate the problem came from Chapter 3, Section 4, Problem 1.
  • Put the answer to your problem on the same line as the Problem Number, but to the right of the red left margin line on ruled paper. Note: This will require you to leave space (at least 2 blank lines if the answer will fit on one line) for the answer before you have found it. If the answer has multiple parts (like part a,b,c then you will likely need more than one line.) After you work the problem, you will transfer your answer from the bottom of your work to the proper location next to the problem number.
  • Skip one line after the answer, and then show your work.
  • After all of your work has been shown, skip two blank lines before starting the next problem.
  • Do NOT use more than one column for your work.
  • If by chance your answers are out of sequence, please make a note.
  • If your homework is on multiple pages, please put page numbers at the top right corner as "Page 1 of 3" on first page and then "Page 2 of 3," and so on...
  • Put a staple at the top left when submitting multiple pages. Do not use a paperclip or just "crimp" the corner. Use a staple!
  • If you do not use ruled/lined paper, please emulate this format as much as possible

Academic Honesty Requirements:

You are encouraged to work with others in the completion of homework. However, in the spirit of Academic Honesty, which includes crediting others for their contribution to you work, please include one of the following statements with every submitted assignment:

1) I worked alone on this assignment.
2) I worked with the following: List their full names. Include their relationship to you if they are not also a member of this class.

If you feel a more detailed description should be given, please do so.

You must include the full name of everyone with whom you worked except me. This includes anyone in the Math Center, other instructors, friends, as well as private tutors.

If you colloborated with someone other than a classmate, please also indicate their relationship to you. For example write, "I worked with my tutor Elle Helpo." or "I worked with Dewey Cheetam in the Math Center."

If you referenced any other source (including websites) other than the class text book, your class notes, and my website during the completion of your assignment, you must disclose it fully.

How to Question the Grading of Assignment:

If you wish to dispute the grading of an assignment, I am happy to hear your concerns. Please follow this procedure:

Staple to the front of the entire assignment a cover sheet with your name, email address, and indicate the problem number you are disputing. Write a short and precise description of your concern on the cover sheet. If you make additional notes on the problem you are disputing, please do so in a manner which makes it clear which work is the original submission and which part is the notation. It may be best to make additional notes in a different color ink, for example.

Give this to me within 2 class periods from when the assignment was returned to the class. There is no need to discuss this with me in person. I will ask you more questions should I not understand your dispute. I will read your dispute, make a decision, and return it to you as soon as possible (usually by the next class period).

There is no penalty or worry of retribution for asking for a review. I do, however, request you to double check your dispute before submitting it. Sometimes mistakes do happen, and I'm happy to correct them when they do.
